Major in French and Francophone Studies

The French major consists of a minimum of 30 credit hours (10 courses) in French at the 2000 level or above.  These include 12 credits from the four Core Course group (or their equivalent); the three 1-credit French-for-Engineering sequence (3101-3102-3103) taken over 3 semesters: and must include one French-language W (3268W or 3211W).  Students typically also take 3 to 6 credits from any of the General list of classes at Storrs.  Typically, during your year at Toulouse you  will also take 9-12 credits of the Major and 3 to 6 credits of “relateds” each semester, including the internship.

  • All Gen-Ed eligible course or CORE Courses (above) should be completed at Storrs.
  • * If students have near-native level pronunciation, they can ask for a waiver for 3257.  They must substitute this course with any elective from the table below.
  • ** Student must take one French-language W course (either 3268W OR 3211W)
  • ***The three-semester 1-credit French for Engineering sequence FREN 3101, 3102 should ideally be taken in the fall and spring of the sophomore year, with 3103 taken in the fall of the junior year. ( In rare exceptions, students may take 3101 and 3103 in the same fall semesters of the junior year,  with 3102 in the spring also of the junior year).

“Related” credits are usually taken during your year in France: 6 credits during the fall term while completing your French degree (any course in the history, political sciences, business, or science of the French or Francophone world or in art history, languages, Human Rights, or European studies), to be approved by the advisor.  You will also receive 6 internship/related credits in French (3283) for your engineering internships.
