General Education Requirements

To optimize your German course work as part of General Education, there are two options:

Option 1:

  • Content Area 1:

A (Arts): GERM 3261W / B (Literature): GERM 3255W (the one we typically offer from the sequence 3252 – 3255) / C (History): Take any one course listed here in the Catalogue / D (Philosophy/Ethical Analysis): PHIL 1104 required for Engineers (no substitutes)

A,B,C,D,E: Take one additional course, but NOT a Germ course because you need courses from four different academic units = 5 Courses

  • (Content Areas 2 and 3 have no German courses, the requirements are the same as for the School of Engineering)
  • Content Area 4: Use Germ 3261W for the “double dip.” Take GERM 3251 or GERM 3258 for the other course in this area.

Option 2:

  • Content Area 1:

A: Any course that is NOT GERM / B: Germ 3255W / C: Any course in this category / D: PHIL 1104; E: GERM 3251 or GERM 3258 = 5 courses

  • (Content Areas 2 and 3 have no German courses, the requirements are the same as for the School of Engineering)
  • Content Area 4: GERM 3251/3258 and another course, e.g. GERM 3261W. You’re allowed two “double dips” for General Education Requirements between Content Area 1 and Content Area 4.

With both options you will already have earned 9 credits of the 24 – 2000 level German Studies credits required for the German Studies major (Germ 3251, 3261W and 3255).
